The site on which the museum has been build was explored by the known archaeologist Henry Cousens in the 19th century.
This museum is the result of last Nizam’s efforts, to preserve the rich history and heritage of the state and country in spite of the British Rule. It is consisted of various ancient items which were excavated during the years around 1940. This was done under the guidance of the then Nizams of Hyderabad.
In 1930, a museum was established in Public Garden, Nampally. However, during 1952, the items displayed in that museum were shifted to the present building. Later works of various contemporary artists were also collected in the Museum. This was done under the Archaeological Survey of India surveillance. It was in 1968 when it was formally named as the AP State Museum and came under the jurisdiction of Andhra Pradesh Government. Till then the museum was called as Hyderabad Museum. It has too many galleries and each with many interesting things to see. Very rare things to see. Visit at least once.

AP state Archaeology Museum has very rich collections. Some of them you will not find anywhere else in India. It even has an Egyptian mummy. I have heard that there only a few mummies in India. In spite of all this, this museum is not kept in good condition. All the valuable history is getting lost slowly which is quite sad to see. Some of friends who also went with me told that this mummy is disintegrating as it is not kept properly

This museum has good collection for you to see like reproductions of Ajanta paintings and those Hindu and Buddhist sculptures. It also has a Quran copy with a seal from Shah Jahan. You can see contemporary works too here. But do check Hyderabad museum timings. We had to go twice to just see it. It is closed on Fridays and on all the main public holidays.

AP state archeology museum is usually not suggested to us tourists when we visit to Hyderabad. It is not very popular but an awesome place to visit. Take out some time and visit this museum. I like to explore history that’s why loved this museum even more. Its artefacts and galleries are worth seeing. The best part is it was all created by the last nizam on his own.

AP state museum Hyderabad is not a very grand museum, it is a simple one. The collection at this museum is good though. It has Egyptian Mummy, many artefacts belonging to Chalukyan period and Vijayanagara period and even imitation of Ajanta paintings. This place is not maintained properly. It definitely needs some renovation or else the museum will lose its charm. If you really love knowing history then go for one or two hour max. Opening timings of ap state museum is from 10.30 am to 5 pm.
