History of Bansilalpet Stepwell Hyderabad
Bansilalpet Stepwell Secunderabad is said to have been built around the 17th century during the Asif-Jahi period. The stepwell was named Naganah Kunta according to a 1954 map, and it remained in use well into the 20th century. In 1933, the surrounding area was developed into a residential area. This development was funded by a local businessman, Seth Bansilal, and the well was renamed Bansilalpet Baori (baori meaning stepwell).
After a series of tragic incidents in the 1980s, the use of the stepwell decreased. It gradually became a neglected pit, contributing to urban flooding. Bansilalpet Stepwell restoration began in 2022 by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and The Rainwater Project. More than 2000 tons of debris were removed during the restoration.
