Where is Telangana Martyrs Memorial?
Telangana Martyrs Memorial location is in Gun Park, near Hussain Sagar Lake. With its iconic shape and polished, mirror-finish exterior, Amara Jyothi Telangana Martyrs Memorial draws visitors from all over the country. It’s the largest seamless stainless-steel memorial in the world.
History of Telangana Martyrs Memorial
Telangana Martyrs Memorial stands as a solemn reminder of the 1969 Telangana agitation that claimed the lives of 369 youth (predominantly students). These deaths occurred during widespread protests due to dissatisfaction with the merger of the Telangana region with Andhra Pradesh in the 1956 States Reorganisation Act, despite promised safeguards for regional interests.
The first martyr, identified as Shankar, died on January 27, 1969, during early unrest in Khammam district, marking the beginning of a turbulent phase. While the broader Telangana movement from the 1950s to 2014 recorded over 1,500 deaths, Telangana Martyrs Memorial specifically honours the 369 youth as the catalyst that embedded statehood aspirations in public consciousness.
With Telangana becoming a separate Indian state on June 2, 2014, Telangana Martyrs Memorial Day is observed across the state every year. This Telangana Martyrs Memorial’s completion and inauguration were held on June 22, 2023.

Architecture of Telangana Martyrs Memorial
Telangana Martyrs Memorial was designed by noted sculptor Aekka Yadagiri Rao. The structure rises to an impressive height of 161 feet (over 49 metres), and it’s claimed to be the world’s largest seamless stainless-steel structure. It has a striking mirror polish that reflects both the sky above and visitors below.
Built with around 4,500 high-grade, mirror-finish stainless steel plates (weighing over 100 tonnes), the memorial structure blends modern engineering with philosophical symbolism. For the golden flame on the top, carbon steel has been used. The base of the memorial is black polished granite – chosen to express mourning.
The sun-arch above the base was inspired by the Sanchi Stupa. And the plaques embossed in it represent the greatness of the cause. The nine strips or columns carved above signify unity among the districts. A trapezium structure bears the dharma chakra, representing justice, tolerance and truth. Crowning the Martyrs Memorial is a white lily sculpture, symbolising the freshness of youth and immortality of the soul.
